Week 10 Blog

HI Class,

Welcome back from our week long hiatus. I hope you had some time to rest and recuperate and are ready to make a big push for the finish.

Our last unit calls you to complete an ethnography project where you investigate the culture of a community and look into the driving forces behind its modes and methods of communication. For our first blog, list two separate communities you are interested in looking into for your ethnography project. Beyond listing the community, you should also deliver a paragraph or two about each community showing your knowledge of the communities and explaining why you are interested in looking at those communities.

By the close of the third week of March, you should have completed at least one field site observation (we did an exercise in class showing you how to do double entry note taking before break) and you should establish an informant  (someone in the field who you can trust as one to help you understand the community). For blog eleven, which will be due on March 25th, you will write up your first field report (which consists of consolidating your field notes into a narrative).

This blog response is due before 11:59pm on Monday, March 11th. Usually it is due on Sunday, but I want to give you an extra day to get back into the swing of class.

If you have any questions, please send me an email.

  1. I have already chosen the community for my ethnograpy. It is a community that has always interested me because they are the people that bring trend and beauty to our world. It is the subculture known as the beauty industry.
Each time I attend the hair show with my daughters, Andrea and Sarah, both are stylists, I am amazed at the innovations that are presented year after year. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, someone else comes along and raises the bar just a little higher! With each theme comes more creativity. Stylists are artists in every sense of the word. They use their talent to improve our looks, to create what God didn’t give us and to show us how easy it can be to upkeep it ourselves.
It is a community made up of many from many cultures, and although they may speak different languages, they understand one another through hair and makeup. My daughter, Andrea, is one of the learning leaders at the Paul Mitchell School. I will interview her and get more insight into this mysterious and exciting world known as Cosmetology.

  2. The community that I am most interested in doing is half marathoners/ rundisney community. I have been in this community for about three years now. I am interested in doing this community for my assignment because I know a lot about half marathons especially the way that Disney sets up half marathons like the expos and how they set up the courses. I have a lot of knowledge about what runners do for training, before races, during races, and after races. I also know many people that are involved in this community so it wouldn’t be difficult to find someone to interview with.

My second community that I am thinking about doing is the Husky Pup Preschool/Early Childhood Education. This is a program that my high school offered. I have been apart of this class for four years. Through this class I was given the opportunity to teach children. I really enjoyed this class and I learned a lot about children’s development and ways to teach children effectively. I know a lot about how the preschool runs and the different things the teachers have to do. This is defiantly another possibility for my ethnography.

  3. The first community that I am interested in is the Fire Department. The reason I am interested in that community is because I am trying to start a career in that field. I know only what some of my friends have told me about in their jobs. Like how they work about three days a week and that it’s a twenty-four hour shift. I also know that there is a medical side to it and that there are many different rankings, much like the military. I want to learn more about this community so I can see what type of things go on inside the fire station. That way I have a better understanding of the career I am getting into. Also I would like to make some kind of connection with the station so I may be able to get help into my job through some guidance from people in the firefighting community.

The second field that I would choose would have to be nursing so that I would have a better understanding of what my girlfriend does at work. I really only know what she tells me, which is that she stands all day and deals with some interesting people. I have always been curious to see what goes on in a hospital from an employee’s perspective so it would be interesting. Also I feel as though I will be seeing hospitals more often when I start doing paramedic school, so it would possibly give me an insight of what goes on after I bring a patient to the hospital. That way I have an advantage into the job I am starting.

  4. The first community that I am interested in is the Health department. I am currently interested into becoming an assistance physical therapist. Reason for that is because my aunt and uncle convinced me into becoming one, over the summer i spent a week overlooking what they do as registered physical therapists. I observed how they took care of there patients and most of them were senior citizens. They were very careful with they patience as they perform the therapy, what i also did was do a bit a paper work, filing a few patience to what their reason is to having an appointment with the RPT's. I want to learn more about becoming a physical therapist but for now i will start off as an assistant and eventually work my way up to becoming a physical therapists. I also want to learn the different types of ways to giving therapy to patience.

The second field that i would choose would probably a photographer or film maker. I've seen lots of great photos and videos from various sources such as instagram, youtube, at movie theaters, etc. I'm very creative when it comes to those kinds of stuff, i know how to take great picture and know how to possibly make a little film. I just need to learn how to edit and acquire the right equipment. The community of photography is all around the world. Photographers sharing their photos wherever they may be at. They share it on the internet for the world to see. Same with videos, you tube is one of the best ways to share videos and I've seen a lot of great short and long films. I've never thought of studying photography or film. But if i have no where else to turn, this community is where i maybe be entering in.

The first community I am interested in is the Legal Community. Every area of this world is attached to some form of law or regulation. No matter what career you choose, there are laws that govern and influence. I work in the financial industry. I see that there are both civil and criminal laws that affect my job. I would like to see how life inside a law firm works. Obviously, attorneys have their own language. I have an acquaintance that is a relatively young lawyer, she has been practicing for almost six years. Her place in the field is still starting out. I would like to understand how she interprets the law and what she does on a daily basis. I also have an interest in law enforcement, so understanding the Judicial branch's role in our government is something worth exploring.

The second discourse community I am interested in exploring is a Christian community. Religion is definitely a world worthy of exploration. There are so many concepts and words that are unique to their community. As an outsider, it seems like an entire different language. I have a friend that attends church weekly, but she also leads a weekly Bible study, volunteers at an At-Risk Youth Program and sits on the Board of her church's telecast. She is thoroughly involved in the church community. I would like to see how business gets done inside a church. I have been attending church off and on for about two years. There is still a lot I don't understand. I am interested in knowing the differences in denominations.

Both of these discourse communities play a big role in our society. Both have a lot of influence. I am looking forward to digging into either one of these communities.

  6. The first discourse community I wanted to look into was a Pediatric Office. I am looking into going into the medical billing and coding area so it would be perfect so that I could get a feel of what I am getting myself into. From what I am learning now, it seems like a lot to have to remember, yet when I go into a doctors office, the people who are working in that area seem so good and consistent at what they are doing. There is a lot of vocabulary that is needed to be memorized and I also wanted to be able to sit back to see how they communicate with the doctors and other people working in the field.

The second discourse I was looking into was a little bit familiar. I wanted to go into a Veterinarian Office. The reason I wanted to go there is because I was juggling between going to school to work with animals or people. Even though I chose to pursue medical billing and coding, I still feel it might be cool to go in either way to see the difference between the two different areas.

  8. My two options for communities are the dance team at Hagerty High School and Anticoh Missionary Baptist Church nursery.

I am interested in observing and doing my ethnography paper on the dance team at Hagerty because I have always loved dance and admired what dancers can do. I know the coaches as well as a few dancers therefore observations should be no problem as well as interviews. I find dance to be so interesting and it engrosses me when a dancer knows how to tell a story through their dance. I have seen performances by the team before and a few dancers stood out to me so I have an idea of who I would like to interview. I know they just did competition at Disney so they might not practice as much but I would really enjoy watching their practices and performing.

My other community is the church I attend, which has a nursery that I volunteer in. I work with kids ages zero to two. I think I would find a lot of humor doing observations of the kids. Young kids that do not talk with real words are entertaining when talking to other kids or even adults. I could interview several of the volunteers as well as the supervisor. Because there are different kids every Sunday and a different amount of kids, the observations would never be the same. I could also interview some parents if necessary. Kids are just fun to be around so I think I would enjoy this community as well.

  9. Listening to your comments this evening we should pick a community that interests us. With that in mind I have chosen my two communities. My first community is my church obviously. I spend most of my extracurricular time there. I have grown up in the church but have been in this particular church around 3 years. How fit the title community is since that is exactly what the church is. I am very active in all aspects of this community being pretty much the leader of it. I must and do observe it constantly so this will be very accessible for me. I hope by describing this community it will enlighten the reader to our lifestyle or atleast our worship experience and family atmosphere that so many experience and so many others don't.
My second community will be a dental lab that i work in. As a former Dental Lab owner I have many colleagues in the field. I have since sold my lab after 15 years to this lab owner and currently work for him as a contractor. You would be very surprised at the in and outs that go on in a dental laboratory. Especially since most people don't even know exist. I can truly say it is technical but also a soap opera in there with all the different personalities and their responsibilities. I am going to have fun writing what I observe now and have been for years and look forward to sharing this world to my readers...

  10. The first community i'm interested in is a promotional team called Smokin Aces. I'm interested in doing my paper on them because they are the talk of the town when it comes to knight life, every party they have reaches capacity and they seem to do it effortlessly i've wanted to get into something like this since i've started college. I know the leaders of the team so they have no problem with me doing my paper on them. I want to have an interview with all the team members to see what they bring the team and how all their talents mesh. I will also use this experience to show me if I really want to get into the knight life.

The second community i would like to do an paper on is an Modeling Troupe called Faces. Faces is a very top notch modeling troupe that teaches young women and men life lessons as well as how to be a model. I've always been interested in modeling and fashion. When i first heard of Faces I wanted to join but i was skeptical because it is very time consuming. I know a lot of their models and some of the E-board members so I have spoken with them about the paper. I only plan on interviewing the president because she has the most knowledge of the modeling troupe. While doing the paper I plan on seeing if i want to join the troupe.
