This week you are delivering a piece that outlines the history and
development of the discourse community you are investigating. There are
many ways to investigate the history of a community (perhaps there are
sections in its website that outline its origins), but there are also
archival sources at libraries that trace histories of communities too.
Often times, members will have an understanding of the history and
development of a community, so talking with them is a great option.
Whether
you delve into the history of the community through an email interview
or other means, it is important that you outline the history and origins
of the community and how it came into existence. You might also delve
into important historical moments when you write about the history of
the community. Think of this blog posting as being an important part of
your final ethnography paper.
There is no word count
for this piece, and since we are quite busy putting this project
together, this posting is not due until Friday, April 12th before
11:59pm.
Elizabeth Wardle: Identity, Authority, and Learning to write in New Workplaces.
ReplyDeleteThe reason I am picking this article as a lens on the community I am working on, because in the article Wenger describes three interrelated modes of belonging is completely explaining the community I am in now. My topic is about food community. Engagement is the main path for food community, the reason being is people join in from around the world sharing their passion of food. In their passion not only sharing recipes also sharing their experience from preparing, making, eating, and feeling about food, which allow people to imagine other people experience. Alignment is also very important in the community, because beside the written recipes there are also pictures or video to share. Allow people to have a visualize of the information they are providing, and with all the information people from around the world can understand each other.
I am a food lover. I love to eat, cook, and even look at pictures of food, and food is my passion. In Wardle’s idea of “identity” allow me to claim the community, because everyone in the food community is all about food. People do not think about where you from, what language you speak, what color of your skin, what religion you believe, as long as you have the passion for food, you are welcome in the community to share any experience you have with food. I believe in food community has no judgment for everyone who wants to join in, even people just want to learn about the simple tool for kitchen equipments. For example: Kitchen Gadgets: Unexpected Hits? People share their favorite kitchen tool, and explaining how to use it or use it different ways.
Two main websites I am currently investigate of my food community, both sites have very interesting information on the food community. Of course, the main common ground is sharing recipes, but members within the community behavior are the same. They all have the passion about food, want to share all the information to the word.
In some of the post I can see there has people has more experience of cooking or they are a chef, to help other people who have questions.

Digital Discourse Analytical Framing
Framing piece: Literacy, Discourse, and Linguistics: Introduction, James Paul Gee (1989)
Framing principles:
- Online community as a “Discourse”
- Unique language/style of a Discourse
- Acquiring a Discourse through enculturation
My online digital community is very much an example of Gee’s “Discourses.” There is a certain way of posting and communicating that is far-removed from normal primary Discourse. In order to be accepted into the Discourse, one must first learn how we communicate, and then slowly acclimate to the community/way of doing things.
--------------------------------------------------------
In collecting data for my Digital Discourse Community Ethnography, I have seen a strong parallel between the community and the principles introduced by James Gee.
Gee introduces the idea of discourse as an entire way of doing things, rather than simply a stream of connected thoughts. Gee’s “Discourse” transcends words – it is speech, style, tone, and even gesture. When reviewing my online community, I see trends in communication that define the community itself. There is a specific language, made up of terms phrases that might make no sense to an outsider: 2nd, tpiwwp, BOOM, pole(l), BT, YFF, repost. There are specific styles of posting: spoofs, news, advice, trolling. There are known yet unwritten rules for discourse: WF, WW, 1st rule. There are subgroups of users inside the community: trolls, Blood Brothers, lurkers. It even has historical context – a sort of “legend” that gives depth to some users and styles: MBtB, Ronal wheels, PS2 $199.
The community itself seems to transcend the forum, and the site we congregate on. The comradery seems to come from the underlying need for escape, rather than any one shared viewpoint or common hobby. Although the site is specific to a certain model of vehicle, many of the users in this particular community don’t even own that type of car. There’s even such a strong consideration for posting style that the community migrated to a new site when new forum software was installed on the old site several years ago.
In order to be accepted and to thrive within the community, one must know all these nuances or else be outcast as a n00b. This barrier for entry, this requirement of fluency for acceptance, also reflects Gee’s definition of a Discourse. One must first learn the rules, learn the style, and display a mastery of the medium. The only way to do so is to watch from afar for a while before diving in. One must immerse oneself into the forum for a while to learn these techniques. At first, the language can seem alien. Once one has been around for a while they will start to learn from context, and can then communicate with the group. This process of enculturation reflects Gee’s definitions as well.

ReplyDeleteJohn Suler's The Psychology of Cyberspace
Principles I am using as framing mechanisms:
“You Don’t Know Me (Dissociative Anonymity)”
This is essentially the idea that within an online environment- you are anonymous and your actions cannot be traced back to you in day-to-day life.
“They don’t have to own their behavior by acknowledging it within the full context of who they “really” are.”
It’s Just A Game (dissociative imagination)
This is essentially the idea that your actions within an online space take place within a make-believe fantasy world that is separate from your real life.
“People may feel that the imaginary characters they “created” exist in a different space, that one’s online persona along with the online others live in a make –believe dimension”
We’re Equals (Minimizing Authority)
This is essentially the idea that, absent face-to-face social interactions you have no idea who you are really conversing with. You could be conversing with the President or just a regular person, there is no way to tell or prove whom you are speaking with. This, in effect, limits the amount of authority that a person has online that they might otherwise have in person.
“While online a person's status in the face-to-face world may not be known to others and it may not have as much impact as it does in the face-to-face world.”
These various framing principles can be demonstrated through the online video gaming forum I am monitoring, http://www.diablofans.com/.
On this forum, and most others, users are known by their username and not their real one. They may choose to provide more information about themselves like where they live, etc. but most do not. This ties in to the principle mentioned earlier, dissociative anonymity. Users on this forum are anonymous which contributes to a sense of disinhibition. The actions cannot be traced back to their real lives and this is freeing in a sense, enabling them to voice their true opinions without fear of repercussions. This is also true and noticeable within the game this forum is dedicated to, Diablo 3. The other two framing mechanisms I mentioned are extensions of Dissociative Anonymity.
The first, Dissociative Imagination, can be demonstrated both through the actions of users on the forum and in the game itself. While playing the game or posting, individuals may choose to act like complete jerks or go out of their way to be helpful to others. They know that, ultimately, they will be known by their usernames / character names. This enables them to create a new persona that reflects one or more aspects of their personality though the actions of their characters. This particular persona may be very different from their offline personality.
The second, Minimizing Authority, is demonstrated somewhat subconsciously. With all users/players being anonymous, it is not possible to tell who people really are in the offline world. With that in mind, people are treated as equals with regard to their roles in offline life- that role simply is irrelevant. I have seen players and forum users that mention their authoritative roles in everyday life: Police Officers, Doctors and Lawyers. These individuals know that their offline roles have no pull in this particular arena however, and they set that role aside. In order to have authority on this forum, you must have an extensive knowledge of the game- and the achievement points to back it up. In this situation, 14 year old Jimmy may be far more knowledgeable about the game or forum rules and because of this knowledge; he is viewed as an authority figure within the environment.
The online community I am investigating is Body Building. Up until a few months ago, I avoided the gym like the plague. Now however, it has become an obsession. This has sparked a huge interest in the world of fitness, so it made sense for me to pick this as my original idea for this assignment was getting me nowhere. Body Building blogs, such as the one listed on Bodybuilders.com, are designed to encourage as well as inform the readers for more results at, and away, from the gym. For my lens, I am using the article from Elizabeth Wardle for identity as this seems to fit the best. I found that three of the main identities mentioned in Wardle's piece were Engagement, Imagination, and Alignment. I found that the three fit here.
ReplyDeleteIn order for these people to be able to write these blogs, they have to have experience in the gym. Currently the blog I am researching is on Bulking UP, something most women avoid. However, these women had a vision, an imagination, of what they wanted their bodies to look like. This is where it started. From there, they were able to have an engagement with other body builders; in other words, coming together for a common purpose of getting bigger and badder, thus creating the body building blog. In this forum, the bloggers have an alignment, a coming together, for the furthering of their knowledge from women who have been able to pack on the muscle.
I can also use Gee here. While some people may be getting online and mushfaking their actual gym activity, many women are posting pictures and updates of what they are doing and the progress they are making to be able to prove that their routine works. They are using actual photographic evidence of their secondary discourse to be able to prove their point.
The data that I have collected so far is pretty basic. The authority figures in the blog are those who have posted the most, and have been ranked by RepPower. The most RepPower seems to be the most trustworthy according to the website. Also, the blogs have links that go back to their BodySpace so you can see who they are, their progress, and their lives basically. They also seem to have their own lingo which I will be deciphering. Many of these terms are, I’m sure, from the competition world, but they are being used in everyday nutrition/workout blogs for these women as well. As these women are serious in their pursuit, I’m sure there will be more than enough blogs for me to further investigate this community.

I intend to look at the social/economic abilities and opportunities opened up by computer literacy, as from brandt's standpoint then continuing on into Sulers concepts of identity and online posturing from a personal stance so as to transition to Wardles more social oriented concepts of the same topics and finish using Gee's discussion of discourses as communities so as to address the ethos of individuals online.
________________________________________________________________
I'm second in life a redditor. I'm not as quasi-religiously dedicated as others, however I do make a point to check out my favorite sub-reddits frequently (Namely politics, technology, and science). Part of my inspiration to return to reddit and continue my digital life there was the SOPA/PIPA blackout undertaken by many major websites.
While normally a given website is relatively disconnected from their physical lives, reddit actually reverses this in a limited fashion. Namely their IAmA (I am a ) threads which you have to prove who you are in order to be accepted as such, and then usually upvoted for interest. Now as can be easily seen I have already used reddit specific vernacular, and further more I have shown a degree of "In crowd" for reddit due to my having the knowledge of these discourses. This being said, you can further state that reddit breaks this general trend of online communities as the "we're all equals" does not necessarily apply in all cases, again citing the IAmA threads you can then argue questions brought up from the ethos of your profession or position. Furthermore, imaginary individuals are not created beyond your "internet mask" so to speak.
Collectively however reddit is incredibly judgmental regarding grammar and form, which has driven people out of the community before and discourages posting in general for fear of immediate backlash over your grammar. This makes it a necessary skill to be able to spell effectively and form complete thoughts without gaps that can be attacked. Furthermore you can collect "kudos" or "link karma" for constructive posting and up-votes given to you. This allows for individuals to be considered trustworthy or reputable after a fashion.
In an era of internet based communication, particularly of shopping and of social interaction with peer groups, you can most certainly see a strong correlation between internet literacy (or more generally computer literacy) and social ability. However as you begin looking at the workforce, you can also see how computer skills may benefit you from an economic viewpoint as well. For instance if you're knowledgeable about your employers potential checking of your social sites, might you be more restrained? perhaps this will give you the leg up needed to keep or get a new job. These are very relevant questions in today's economy and in dire need of being addressed.
As support of my argument in regards to Brandt, I would like to post this link:
Deletehttp://www.wired.co.uk/magazine/archive/2012/09/features/welcome-to-the-new-reputation-economy?page=all
This covers the idea of combining your social interactions (reputation) with your futures outlook regarding banking and loans for risk assessment.
I am observing the community I chose through the lens of Elizabeth Wardle's Article; Identity, Authority, and Learning to Write in New Workplaces. In an effort to narrow it down, I am analyzing specifically through the theories of Identity and Authority.
ReplyDeleteI am investigating an online forum for the deaf and hard of hearing (HoH) community. I have been interested in the linguistics and communication practices of American Sign Language (ASL) users since experiences with friends in high school, and co-founded our school's ASL club. While I was slightly familiar with this community then, I am finding that due to the advances of cochlear implants in the past 7-10 years, the definitions and terminologies throughout this community are rapidly changing, with some even becoming quite controversial.
Participating in this forum are individuals who are deaf, Deaf, hard of hearing, ASL interpreters, hearing, students of ASL, hearing parents with deaf or HoH children, as well as friends and family members of the previously mentioned groups.
Through the data I have collected thus far, I have seen incidences of “newbies” as well as experienced community forum members striving to belong through the modes described by Wardle as engagement, imagination, and alignment. I have also collected examples of miscommunications, and failure to belong in some parts of the forum due to choices made by individuals unwilling to negotiate their personal identity and authority.
Just two examples from the text which I have witnessed are:
“Participation in new communities requires accepting for oneself identities that are at odds with the values of the other communities to which one belongs” (Lave and Wenger; Russel, “Rethinking”)
“One way newcomers reconcile the competing demands of various communities is to choose to participate in some aspects of the community and not others.” (Wardle)
I am not yet to the point of narrowing down what it is exactly that I have to say, or a specific question to be investigated. I had originally planned on using Gee's study of discourses considering that clearly there are dominant/non-dominant discourses at work here. I expected to find some interesting relationships in an online atmosphere due to the large part that visual cues such as body language, facial gestures, etc. play in effectively communicating through ASL. But as I delved deeper into the community, I began to recognize more examples of individuals challenging (or feeling challenged by) how they view themselves, each other, and those outside their community. I decided that Wardle's article was more relevant. However, because I have not yet had that “aha!” moment of interest, I may end up changing my mind.
I am using Elizabeth Wardle's "Identity, Authority, and Learning to write in New Workplaces" as a framing mechanism for my research on Totalfratmove.com. Reading totalfratmove is sort of like whitnessing a train wreck. On this webite, people in fraternities and sororities post about the behaviors which they would consider to be "norms" for other members of greek life. Other people comment on these posts and rate them too. WArdle's ideas about "identity" nd "authority" are easily appearant through these posting as you can tell which people are more popular than others and which ones are sort of new and not really sure of what some things might mean.
ReplyDeleteAs well as collecting data and information from this website, I also collected data from http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/totalfratmove.com
where it listed statistics for the website such as what countries go on there the most and the top search queries for the website so that I coud further analyze it.

Elizabeth Wardle: Identity, Authority, and Learning to write in New Workplaces.
-Correspondence, Identity, Engagement, Alignment, Imagination
The online digital community that chose to observe was the dance community. While reading the different blogs of dancers and spectators I discovered analytical principals Wardle used in her article. More specifically, Identity is often used. An example being: One of the bloggers I observed is clearly biased against a high school dance team and wants everyone to that he/she identifies (and embraces it) himself as another dance team’s fan.
With the information that I have collected so far, I have been able to identify the different people who are posting the blogs. The main ones I see posting are usually dance coaches/ instructors or parents. There is one blog that I have actually been following for years, due to that I was on a dance team all throughout high school. The blogger is kind of like the Perez Hilton of the dance world, except obviously not nearly as famous or known. However, he always posts his opinion or assumption on what will happen at a dance competition and who will place where (like 1st ,2nd, or 3rd). He gets many responses to his blogs with the opinions of others. He also gets requests from people asking for his opinion on how he thought a team’s performance was. It’s all very interesting to me. There is a lot of imagination that goes into the process. Clearly. There is also a hint of correspondence. Many people will disagree with whom he has put in as first place; they often feel that the team they are routing for belongs there. You could also explain that as an identity resistance. Like they don’t want to be identified as not being good enough for first place.
Since I have been reading this continuous blog for years I have been able to distinguish the cutthroat behavior of these bloggers with all their opinions. The best way to describe how they write and express their opinion would be to compare them to a pair of teenaged girls that dislike each other. They insult each other while complementing them in the end so no harm seems to have been done.
Paul J. Hagerty High School is less than a decade old; therefore there is not much history to the dance program. In my interview I did find out that Ms. Diane Hasenbank is the founding coach of the Unleashed dance team. She stated that she knew the principal, Sam Momary, wanted a person that was serious about dance and could win in competitions. The school has been around for eight years and as far as I know, there has been a dance team from the start. The team has definitely expanded from one team to several. Today there is a small varsity, large varsity, and a junior varsity which make up 41 girls.
ReplyDeleteDance in general has been around since the beginning of time. Because dance has been around so long it was difficult to find the real history. Doing a little research I found that nobody knows an actual time of when dance originated. Dance most likely started as a ritual but eventually became an entertainment; which is depicted on cave walls. Dance is a part of all cultures in celebrations, entertainment, life, death, etc. Different branches of dance have all originated at different times and because there are so many branches it would take a lot of dedication to go through and learn all.
Basically, the history of dance started as a way to worship Gods/Goddess, tell stories, and evolved into a form of entertainment for many different occasions.

Ethnography Project
Company History
It all began with $700.00 and a dream. Cyril (Paul) Thompson Mitchell and a friend John Paul Dejoria desired to create hair products that did not use animal testing. These products are still available today, but the empire is worth an estimated $900 million annually!
Paul Mitchell was born in Scotland and after two unfulfilling years of learning to silver smith, he followed in his mother’s footsteps to join the world of cosmetology. He studied under Vidal Sassoon, then, moved to the United States where he opened a successful chain of salons. He has one son, Angus, who is co-owner and very involved in his father’s legacy. He has become successful stylists in his own right. Paul Mitchell passed away in 1989.
Paul Dejoria is an American. His mother was a Greek immigrant and his father, an Italian immigrant. His mom and dad divorced when he was very young. His mother couldn’t support the family and as a result, he grew up in foster care. He was basically a street thug, until a math teacher told him he would never amount to anything. He became an employee of Redken Laboratory and because of a dispute, was fired. He and his friend Paul Mitchell borrowed $700.00 to begin creation of the three products that started it all; “The Shampoo”, “The Conditioner” and “The Sculpting Lotion”.
Paul Mitchell Schools are an extension of the dream and dedication to make our world a beautiful place. Part of the their giving culture include “Grow Appalachia” that offers skills and resources for healthy foods that feed the elderly and disabled in Appalachia, “The Blue Project” that preserves and protects our oceans, and “The ‘Fun’raising Project that help builds homes for needy families, feed hungry children and supports victims of abuse.

The journey of tracing the history of my community Bethel Sda Church has led me to find out many interesting facts. I have found that many of the people I interact with every week are actually responsible for the beginning of this community and many people I know personally were also apart of the beginning of the community of which I have been apart of for over 3 yrs now and am currently the leader of. The journey begins with me using the resources around me, the current members. I called our clerk and asked her who are oldest and founding members are. She gave me the name of 4 members she knew of. One of them Elder Bowen the former Head Elder and the man responsible for bringing me to this church has dementia and unfortunately is no help. It is very sad since he played one of the most important roles in starting this church. Another member sister Frost was very sick and I felt guilty interviewing her considering her condition. Actually she was so grateful I called believing I called to pray for her. Truthfully I wasn't aware she was so ill and didn't have the heart to tell her I was calling to interview her for a paper I was writing. The other two however proved very useful. Sister Lampkin who is a very active member in this community and sister Astwood our church treasurer and also a very active member. Both of whom are very close friends and church family to me. Sister Lampkin said she was just thinking about our history and had a book that had the story of our beginnings. She told me she would get it to me later. So I called sister Astwood and she too led me to the same book that sister Lampkin was mentioning. She was kind enough to lend me her copy with the stiff warning” You better return this". While glancing through the book she anxiously showed me old pictures of current members and with a smile on her face pointed out member after member. We both laughed while we saw the kid pictures of some and the hairstyles and the always great 20 lbs lighter pictures of our members. It was definitely a bonding moment in her house as we looked through what felt like an old family photo album. After all this is what we are in this community, family. I said goodbye to her and prayed with her sick husband before leaving. The book is an Anniversary paperback Edition filled with pictures of members and their church positions as well as sponsorship ads from local businesses of the time some of which are still in existence now. The item I have searched for is right in the front of the book. A two page article entitled CHURCH HISTORY. This community was started by a few individuals from mainly another larger church called Mt.Sinai in Orlando, Fl who planned tent meeting in the area of Eatonville Florida in March 1990. Elder Bowen the man who I was most close too before we, his wife and I had to put him in a home for elderly veterans was the leader of the effort. This is very common beginning for many Adventist churches. The Advent movement was built on tent efforts and evangelistic campaigns around the country. In these tent efforts Elders and or pastors lead
ReplyDeleteout in preaching about Christ, prophecy, and church doctrines. Usually they last for 2 weeks but sometimes for months. At the end of the effort people are invited to be baptized and join the church. If enough are baptized from the effort a company is formed and assigned an elder to lead them. When there are enough baptized members a church is eventually formed. The Seventh Day Adventist Church began this way. It started as a movement by a man named William Miller who believed Jesus was coming in October 1844. He went around setting up tents and meetings as many people enthusiastically followed him and left there home churches and joined the movement. A small group of believers from different backgrounds and churches grew and grew to become one of if not the fastest growing protestant denomination in the world with over. Writings and early use of the printing press also greatly aided in the growth of the movement. Copies of the first Adventist magazines were printed "The Adventist Review" and "The Present Truth” along with pamphlets about prophecies in Daniel and Revelation were used in the meetings. This resulted in many souls joining the church. According to Elizabeth Lechleitner/Ann April 10th,2013 Silver Spring, Maryland, United States, "In the 1840s, there were only a few hundred Sabbatarians Adventist, but that number grew to 3,500 by 1863 when the Seventh-day Adventist Church was officially established." www.adventist.org ,4/12/2013. The Seventh-day Adventist church was known as a cultist religion but now is widely known throughout the world. A far cry from its few William Miller followers to its 17,214,683 members as of June 30, 2011 according to www.adventist.org/ .../facts-and-figures/.com 4/12/2013 2:16pm. Why is all of this relevant to the small community of Bethel Sda? Well its history is the same as the denomination it is apart of. Those crusades in Eatonville, Florida from July 16- July 28, 1990 by Elder George Bowens where 2 people were baptized has now grown to a membership of 108 now in 2013. It has gone from a tent to the Eatonville community center, renting a school Hungerford elementary and even renting a church in Eatonville. Now the church owns its own building and though small it is theirs and they are proud of it. The leadership has also changed from Elders assigned from the mother church to various pastors assigned by the conference governing the church. I was introduced to this community in 2009 by Elder Bowen the founder and have since joined its membership. I came at a time when its founder was aging and no longer able to lead effectively. Just enough time for me to be trained by him and take over. As a result of the aging leadership and lack of a full time pastor the membership dwindled. Since me becoming head elder and subsequently its pastor it has been rejuvenated and now more alive then ever. Bethel is currently making plans to build a bigger church building to better serve our growing community. Bethel serves the community it is in and nurtures its members. We all love each other after all Bethel is family....

The community in which I am involved with is West Broward Rheumatology Associates Inc. The company has one free standing building outside of University Hospital in Tamarac, Florida. This is a privately owned business. According to The Medical Group Management Association, a group practice is any relationship between three or more physicians who share facilities, expenses, profits and other resources like support staff and equipment. West Broward Rheumatology is unique because they encompass several specialties; Internal medicine. Rheumatology is the main specialization present in this office. Rheumatology is a subspecialty certification by the Board of Internal Medicine; practitioners treat diseases of the joints, muscles, bones, and tendons. Because this is a subspecialty of internal medicine, it is categorized as a Rheumatology specialist, physician/surgeon. This company was founded October 25, 1995 and it is incorporated in Florida. There are four physicians who practice medicine in this office: Dr. Steven Kimmel, Dr. Kevin Stone Dr. Alan Alberts and Dr. Elias Halpert. Dr. Kimmel is the “president” of the office and is in charge of overseeing the entire office and supporting funds needed for office renovations. Dr. Kimmel is board certified in internal medicine as well as in Rheumatology. He graduated in 1986 from New York University School Of Medicine. Dr. Kevin Stone is known as the office’s “Vice President” and assumes the presidents responsibilities if Dr. Kimmel is not present. Dr. Stone graduated 1984 from El Universidad Mundial Dominicana, School Of Medicine. Dr. Elias Harpert Graduated in 1987 from El Universidad Del Valle, Cali, Division De Ciencias De La Salud. Dr. Alan Alberts graduated in 1988 from The Sackler School Of Medicine, Tel Aviv University. Dr. Kimmel and his 3 other physicians remain to be malpractice free, sanction free and the Board has not needed to take any actions regarding this office. Barbi Tupper is the office manager and is in charge of making sure the office runs smoothly as well as remaining as state of the art as possible. The office is a small office, employing only eight people on the staff. Even with the minimal amount of staff, the office still provides on average a sixteen-minute waiting time, which is less than the national average. According to Barbi, the current estimate of annual revenue is 720,000 dollars. Due to having a small office, this number represents how truly busy this office is at any given day. This office is also fluent in multiple languages including Spanish and even Hebrew. This office is affiliated with multiple hospitals such as Northwest Medical center, Westside regional Medical Center, North Broward Medical Center, University Community Hospital, and even HealthSouth rehabilitation hospital. This office has only received one award but it was the Castle Connolly's Top Doctors™. Castle Connolly Top Doctors® are selected by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. after being nominated by peer physicians in an online nomination process. Nominations are open to all board certified MDs and DOs and each year tens of thousands of doctors cast many tens of thousands of nominations. This is a prestigious award because less than 5% of the nation’s licensed physicians have been selected as Castle Connolly Top Doctors in their regions for their specialties. Three of the four of West Broward Rheumatology’s physicians have received this award.

ReplyDeleteMan has an innate sense of law. Every society, even the most barbaric, has rules and laws that the people in that society must follow or there will be consequences. Our law largely comes from the Common Law of England. But the supreme law of the United States is the U.S. Constitution. The Constitution sets up the rules of Federal law. The American government is divided into three branches; legislative, executive and judicial. The legislative branch is responsible for writing the law, the executive branch is responsible for enforcing the law and the judicial branch is responsible for administering and applying the law. The judicial branch also has the authority of judicial review, which means they can test the constitutionality of the laws. The legislative branch, which is Congress, drafts regulations, codes, treaties and acts. Judges use these acts as well as case law to determine the outcome of a particular cause of action.
The law can be split further into Civil and Criminal law as well as Transactional and Adversarial. A law student is required to take Torts, Property, Criminal, Contracts and Constitutional law, as well as, civil and criminal procedure. These are the foundation classes that enable a law student to delve further into specialty areas. Every aspect of our lives has laws that apply to it. Every job and career path has laws and regulations that apply to it. There is something in each of us that cries for justice in even the most basic level.
The type of law that my informant practices is civil transactional law. It is her job to weed through regulations and codes and extract the applications to her clients. She is looking at a forest, but she has to find the individual trees. Her history is short. She began practicing law 6 years ago. She says that there is still a lot to learn, but she has the skill-set and ability to read and interpret the law. She also has the ability to practice the law. Only those persons that have been to an accredited law school, passed a moral fitness background check, passed an ethics test and passed the daunting bar exam can practice law in the state of Florida. Florida has no reciprocity with other states. Therefore, if she were to move to another state, she would have to be admitted to their bar.
The law serves a very important purpose of giving our society order and clear actions to take when that order has been breached.
In 1837 a man named Friedich Froebel founded his own school and called it “kindergarten,
ReplyDeleteor the children’s garden because he would tutor children at a small garden. Before Frobel created kindergarten children under 7 did not attend school. In America there were places called Infant schools set up in churches, and factories during the Industrial Revolution. In 1965 the program Head Start started for low-income children and it has grown throughout the years. Today, Preschool is growing larger and larger, and more children are attending preschool to prepare them for kindergarten.
Even though I could not find out when this specific program started, My informant, Mrs. Burrell did tell me that this program started at Hagerty three years after the school opened. So the preschool has only been open for about 5 years now. It first started here as just level 1 where there was no preschool just students learning about how to take care of children and guidelines for preschools. Then when Mrs. Burrell came to this school she expanded the program and added the preschool. Every year since this program has started at Hagerty Mrs. Burrell added more kids, though she said this year we hit our max and she will not go above 20 kids. Also throughout the years in this program Mrs. Burrell added more and more observation worksheets for the students to do. Every year she had to change or add something to improve the preschool/program, which I believe she has done a wonderful job. This year she just started an application that students who would like to be in this program have to fill out. She had to do this because she is getting to many students who want to be involved in this community. This program has become very popular at Hagerty and many other schools in Seminole county.

J.P Morgan Chase: The Early Years
JPMorgan Chase & Co. is one of the world’s oldest, largest and best-known financial institutions. Since their founding in New York in 1799, they have succeeded and grown by listening to their customers and meeting the customer's needs. The Bank of The Manhattan Co. (now known as JPMorgan Chase) traces its beginnings to Burr’s fledgling institution. Alexander Hamilton collaborated with Aaron Burr to create The Manhattan Co. JP Morgan Chase has links to many early institutions, such as, The Western Reserve Bank that opened in Ohio in 1812. They also had linked with The Second State Bank of Indiana, that was established in 1834. So The Manhattan Co. or JP Morgan Chase as we know it today has been around for quite some time. The bank made a big splash in 1879 when it sold New York Central Railroad stock to William Vanderbilt without driving down the share price, which was a major deal in those times. This deal offered the largest block of stock at this time and it was a huge success. This success emphasized the new owner of the bank, J.P Morgan's, power. From that moment on Morgans firm was closely associated with railroads, which was the main money maker of that time. J.P Morgan's company now was at the forefront of the banking game and it truly showed while he financed major projects.
J.P Morgan Chase: Today
JPMorgan Chase & Co. is a leading global financial services firm with operations in more than 50 countries and has its corporate headquarters in New York City where it originally started. Its six major sections of banking are Investment Banking, Retail Finance Services, Card Services, Commercial Banking, Treasury and Security services and Assets Banking. To delve deeper Chase Card Services is one of the largest credit card issuers in the United States. The firm offers a wide variety of general purpose cards to satisfy the needs of individual consumers, small businesses and partner organizations. The customer care unit (collections unit) started in the the late 20th century with the upcoming of credit cards. So, understandably there would have to be a credit card service and collections unit.
The community that I chose to investigate is the health community. There is a heath clinic that I go to to observe and as I looked around the clinic and the community around it i noticed a lot of senior citizens, along with old stores, old cars. The area around the clinic is basically an town that has been around for years. There are many clinics around the town of North Port and I got into the health community by my mom and aunt. My aunt owns the clinic in North Port as a registered Physical Therapist along my uncle who is the same. My aunt used to be a nurse just like my mom and my aunt decided to move on to become a PT. The clinic she runs now is a huge success because they are known to be the best PT's in the town, many of my aunts clients are senior citizens and they always come to my aunt's clinic whenever there is a problem or if they come by daily checkups. My aunt and my uncle are really social with their clients, they know how to built a strong relationship, they know how to take care of their patients. I've watched my aunt and uncle work on their patients. I've observed how they do their strategic physical therapy. They do it so well that their clients refer them to other people around town. I've been working my way to become a Physical Therapist Assistant that way I can work with my aunt and uncle in the future because the community around it is really quiet and peaceful, everybody knows each other and are quite friendly once you get to know them. I want to be able to help patients and my aunt and uncle if i'm needed, I tend to grow stronger everyday learning of what it takes to be a Physical therapist and a physical therapist assistant.
ReplyDeleteA little bit about my aunts clinic, this is my aunts second clinic and the first time she started off was in Port Charlotte, the clinic was very small and it didn't have many rooms for patients, the clinic was located at a small complex shared by other stores. When she started there wasn't much people who discovered the clinic because they were new. But as time grew their business became big, big enough to move out to their current clinic that was twice as big compared to their first one. The new clinic that they had moved in was a jackpot because the community around it was filled with senior citizens. North Port is known for it's oldest people living in that area. Today my aunt and uncle are growing stronger and stronger everyday getting new clients of all ages. They have their own secretary to help them with their taxes, bills, money, etc. They have their own physical therapist and as of right now my aunt and uncle are the only ones who run the clinic, despite the nine rooms they have in the clinic they plan to hire more people who are following up on to the health community because the clinic and the community around it is still growing.
"The Guitar Center story began in 1959 when Wayne Mitchell purchased a small appliance and home organ store in Hollywood, California. By 1961, he'd changed the name of the company to The Organ Center. In 1964, Joe Banaran, President of the Thomas Organ Company, approached Wayne in search of an outlet to sell a new line of guitars and amplifiers, called Vox. In 1972, the second Guitar Center opened its doors in San Francisco. San Francisco was a city amidst an explosive musical transition, just exiting its heyday as the 60's "flower power" capitol. The old Guitar Center building had a charm and character that attracted musicians from all over San Francisco. In 1973, Guitar Center San Diego opened its doors. This location proved to play a pivotal role in the growth of the company, as this store was to become the home of the company's first Central Management Office. Ray Scherr started with the company in 1975 behind the accessory counter of Guitar Center, San Francisco."
ReplyDeleteGuitar Center spread through out the entire nation, having over 200 stores, its the biggest music retailer in the entire country. People from all over the world shop there, and can count on the company for any musical needs they need! They also have a sister store that sells woodwind and brass instruments so Guitar Center is over all just the place anyone and everyone can go to for their musical needs! Its still growing as a company, and making improvements all the time!

My discourse community is a comedy club but they aren't really a big group, let alone an official organization. I asked Ross, the interviewee who performs on Drunken Monkey (the studied site) and this is what he had to say regarding information about the comedians and accomplishments of Central Florida comics:
"We don't have a name for the collection of Central Florida comics. The OCC (Orlando Comedy Community) is a Facebook group that you can ask to join that informs people about gigs and comedy related business. Some of the local comics that perform at open mics around town have opened for national comics like Doug Benson and Tig Notaro, and groups of guys have produced their own independent shows and taken them on tour."
